5 days Basic Ski Training and National Ski Championships in Karnali Kalikot, March 2024

In March 2024, the Foundation provided ski equipment to the Karnali Ski Association and dispatched two Nepali ski instructors, who graduated from our Training-of-Trainers course, to Kalikot in Western Nepal. The instructors provided a basic ski training course to 22 Nepalese participants, including two women, from the far West of Nepal. Karnali is the one of the most rural area of Nepal and besides our training in Humla Karnali, this was probably one of the biggest ski events in Karnali´s history. Due to its geography, Karnali profits a lot from the Westerly Disturbances, the weather system that brings the snow or winter rain to the Nepalese Himalaya and is thus very interesting for Skiers and Snowboarders alike. We are proud to support this grass root level activity of skiing in remote regions in Nepal. Out dream of making a ski culture in Nepal is slowly becoming a reality through the opening of new chapters. This event was organized by Karnali Ski Association which is part of the National Ski Association. Hence this event was a crucial milestone for the Nepalese ski community.

Ski Trip to Annapurna Base Camp March 2024

In March 2024, NFSS supported a trip of Nepali and international Skiers from the US and Norway to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). A small group of 3 Skiers consisting of Utsav, Luke and Rebbeka trekked to ABC for exploration of new ski tours and Freeride lines and to shoot a documentary. In total, there were two skiers and Rebekka on her splitboard. Rebekka from Norway is currently finalising the editing of a documentary about the skiing scene in Nepal and this will definitely help in promoting Nepal as a skiing destination globally.

Freeride Trip to Gulmarg, Kashmir (15-21 February 2024)

The Ski and Snowboarding Foundation Nepal organized its annual free ride trip with 6 participants to Gulmarg, India. Participants were skiing for one week with the Ski Club of Gulmarg where participants were able to explore the beautiful backcountry of Gulmarg Resort by freeriding in excellent conditions. The snow conditions in February were absolutely stunning allowing the participants to ski deep and fresh “Curry Powder”. This activity provided a unique experience to all of our students, of which some have never seen a ski lift before. NFSS fully sponsored one participant from Kalinchok who is our local partner and student from the village of Kuri. Overall, this activity contributed again to enhancing and strengthening the ski and snowboard community in Nepal.

2023 Season Update

Installation of 1^st Electric Rope Tow Ski Lift at Kalinchowk, Kuri – December 2023

The Ski and Snowboarding Foundation Nepal was able to import the first commercial rope tow ski lift to Nepal from Switzerland with the help of Catrina Experience a ski resort in Disentis which donated this lift to us. Ervin Jacomet a Swiss IFMGA Guide played a big role in making this ski lift project a success. The Foundation also collaborated with Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, Nepal Mountain Academy and Gold Hospitality. The Nepal Mountain Academy initially helped in making the detailed project report and a feasibility study for a ski resort at Kalinchok which will be operated by the Ski and Snowboarding Foundation Nepal. Furthermore, Gold Hospitality, a private company invested in facilitating the necessary infrastructure including, electricity and land acquisition of the area for the ski resort. Gold hospitality is planning to invest in a proper ski resort with artificial snow and a chairlift in coming years.

Intermediate Ski Training 15 Days Gulmarg, Kashmir (Feb 1 – 15) 2023

NFSS organized a 15 days intermediate ski training in Gulmarg, India with the help of the local ski club of Gulmarg. NFSS is also cooperating with the club on trainings for beginners. In total, there were 20 participant from Nepal. 5 students benefitted from basic training. while 15 were advanced students who continued with the intermediate training. This training increased the capacity of our students  and as some were able to make significant progress, this training concept has proven to be very efficient.

2022 Season Update

It’s been some time since we were able to provide you an update on our training activities in Nepal. Cov-19 has kept us quite busy in Nepal and we suffered problems to organize major events, such as the Kuri Ski Race Competition, which we hope to organize next year again. We also faced hardship in inviting international instructors to Nepal due to ongoing travel restrictions.

On a more positive note, there were also very positive news that reached us during these difficult times. Just before the begin of the Winter Olympics in Beijing we received the news that the sport Skimountaineering will become an Olympic discipline in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milano, Italy. As the official representative body of Nepal in the International Ski Mountaineering Federation, we are excited to begin our training for this major event. We see the future of Nepalese Skiing not so much in the alpine disciplines that require massive amounts of money, time and dedication but in this new form that allows Nepalis to truly aim for medals in the future. Participation is important but having the real possibility to aim for Gold is quite a motivation. We will keep you posted on any updates, events in Nepal and trainings in this context. Fortunately, we received a surprisingly good snowfall at Kalinchok this winter and were able to train in smaller groups. Hence, we managed to bring more beginners to the slopes, maintain the training for intermediates and explored a couple of new slopes on Kalinchok. The trails that were prepared last summer with the help of locals from the village of Kuri were excellent for our skiers and snowboarders. The frequent snowfall allowed us to ski almost entirely from the end of January to Mid-March. The snowfall also attracted not only visitors from Kathmandu, but even some foreigners and expats rented gear and enjoyed their time in the snow & sun. Abinash Lama joined us from Simikot, Humla which also had an extraordinary winter. You can find more information on the ski community in Western Nepal on his Vlog. We are also happy to have seen many of our friends and partners of the Nepal Mountain Academy and Nepal National Mountain Guide Association training on the mountains and exchanging expertise. Only if all stakeholders in the field of winters sports manage to pull on one string we will be able to achieve our goal of expanding the ski & snowboard community, participate in international competitions and make Nepal into a unique destination for skiers, snowboarders and other tourists in the “winter”/”off-season”. In this context, we hope to conduct a workshop in spring 2022 on the issue with all relevant stakeholders to discuss the next possible steps to achieve these goals in a concerted manner.

Moreover, Mahan Jung Pandé, one of our snowboard instructors and longtime member, organized a trip for Skiers and Snowboarders to Gulmarg in Kashmir, India. Our six participants were able to learn fast due to the excellent infrastructures and snow conditions on the mountain. This was the second time for NFSS to visit India to improve their skills and knowledge about winter sports and we hope to organize it again, next year. All participants were excited about the hospitality of our Indian neighbors, their newly acquired skillsets and the friendships created during these fascinating two weeks of international ski exchange. Unfortunately, NFSS members missed out on the National Ski Championship organized by the Nepal Ski Association (NSA) in Muktinath. Since details on the event were published on a very short notice, there was no time to organize our participation. We hope to participate next year with even more athletes, as many have been quite disappointed about the organization of this event. Snow conditions in Lower Mustang have seemed to be good according to participants and the pictures of the event. We also hope to explore more Ski Mountaineering and splitboard tours in this fascinating area of Nepal.

For the current year 2022/2023 we optimistically believe that the number of foreign arrivals might increase again since vaccination levels have given us an adequate level of safety again. We are currently working on a fixed trip to Mera Peak in September 2022 with European Ski instructors and local Ski and Snowboard students. Therefore, we invite interested ones to book their trip to Nepal via our sister company Ski Guides Nepal, since they do provide us with funding and support. After those turbulent days, we finally got some time to wrap up the last season of our Ski school in Nepal. The winter started early for us and we were quite busy during the first weeks of December and January in organizing and participating ski trainings and competitions. In sum, we had a fantastic season with plenty of snow, lots of new skiers and incredible trainings and races in various spots like Mustang, Kalinchok and Annapurna Base Camp.

Trainings at Kalinchok

Our instructors based in Charikot and Kuri, Dolakha, were out in the snow on all weekends of December and Janurary to provide training for interested boys and girls. These trainings are really important to get new people on skis and boards. Hence we are really happy to have our volunteer instructors, who are spending their free time to share their passion.

For the next year we are planning to improve our ski lift and fix the lift poles with cement. Hopefully we will have as much snowfall as in the past seasons to teach even more people how to enjoy the wintersports in Nepal.

National Ski & Snowboard Race

The Nepal Ski Association held its national Ski race in Muktinath, Mustang. We also participated with several athletes and this year for the first time with a team from Dolakha!

Exploring Mustang

Our Snowboard instructor Mahan Pandé and Ski instructor Sukdev Thapa decided to stay after the racing and remained in Jharkot and Muktinath. Already in the spectacular winterseason 2019, they explored several slopes and skinned up new peaks in day trips. These sorts of exploratory trips are incredible important to discover the full potential of Nepals ski & splitboard backcountry and to practice the avalanche and route planning skills. Also, we finally managed to get two splitboards to Nepal. Now our riders will be able to ascent easier uphill to shred the Himalaya.

MoU signed with Mountain Academy of Nepal

On the 29th December 2019, our President Utsav Pathak signed a Memorandum of Understanding with representatives of the Mountain Academy of Nepal (MAN). This cooperation with other stakeholders in the tourism industry is very crucial to promote the possibilities of skimountaineering and splitboarding in Nepal. Hence, we are happy to have the as a partner who is doing outstanding work in the field outdoor education and trainings. We are also happy to share an article on the development of ski mountaineering in MAN´s brilliant Journal in the near future. Furthermore, MAN supported us in the preparations of our high altitude training in the Annapurna Sanctuary and their support was well appreciated. In addition our european ski instructors were happy to share expertise and insights on avalanche safety, route planning and avalanche rescue techniques with students of the MAN.

 

Kuri Ski & Snowboard Challenge 25/26 January 2020

This year, we decided to organize the first Ski& Snowboard competition in Dolakha, since this is where it all began. We had perfect conditions and plenty of high profile guests and a crowd of fans who cheered their friends and athletes. On the downhill ski race Pundarik Pandey recieved a gold medal, Chiring Tamang silver medal and Ramesh Pahrin from Kuri village bronze medal. On our snowboard race Bishal Tamang got gold, Daw Tamang silver and Nabin Tamang bronze medal. We hope to organize this race next year since for us it was a great success with media attention and sponsors involved. This is good to promote Ski & Snowboarding in Nepal.

Annapurna Base Camp Training February 2020

As in the last years, we helt a Ski & Splitboard training in the Annapurna Sanctuary. The lodges are based on 4200m and offer prime backcountry skiing and snowboarding. Since there are gentle slopes for beginners,tons of snow and other various terrains for more advanced skiers, ABC is perfectly suited for us. While we were cautious to head up this year, because an avalanche buried several trekkers 4 weeks before, we evaluated the situation and decided to go. I was really happy to bring my good friend from Humla, Abinash Lama, who I visited last year. If you want to know more about Humla and the West of Nepal, I strongly advise to subscribe to his YT channel.

The snow line started already at around 3000m and the ascent to the Fishtail BC in the hot sun was tough. Nevertheless, we reached our destination and had fruitful days of teaching, exploring and filming in ABC. Hence, it was again an unforgettable time, with dozens of new students who fell in love with skiing. Our instructors provided not only a ski course, but specific workshops on ski waxing, route planning, probing, beacon search and avalanche rescue techniques. In addition, we attempted to ascend in the main north slope of Hiunchuli, however turned around due to much wind slab. Interestingly, there was around 5-10cm new snow every single day. Which allowed perfect skimo conditions and all instructors were happy to explore some new slopes around the BC.

2nd Annapurna Attack SkiMo Race

We also had a revival of our SkiMo Race in ABC. This year we decided for a new route, since last time the race course went inbetween rocks up above the lodges. First the skiers descend around 100m of altitude and about 2km from ABC down to MBC, put on their skinns and race uphill. This new mode was well recieved by the students and we got incredible performances uphill, and downhill.

Corona & Outlook for 2020/2021

This year took an unexpected turn for all of us. Due to the virus and the travel restrictions, the economy in Nepal will suffer treamendous consequences. This will also impact the tourism, since tourists in source countries will rethink their plans in an environment of uncertainty. Unfortunately we were also not able to continue our planned ski training in Humla this spring. Nevertheless, we hope to use this predicament to increase our training opportunities, since many mountain and trekking guides will be free for trainings in September and possibly the whole winter. Therefore we are currently assessing the possibility to conduct another training in Gulmarg, India and a glacier training on Mera Peak for our guides. This would enable us to teach and learn in a period of crisis and make the absolute best out of it. In addition, we would like to bring more Nepali crowds to Kalinchok this December and promote domestic tourism as much as we can.
